HISTORY
   
The Cheeseman Prize Endowment Fund started in 1949 to perpetuate the memory of Mr, H, R, Cheeseman's, CMG, work for education in Malaya. Income from the fund has been used for the Cheeseman Prize English Essay Writing Competition to be awarded in cash with a certificate of award to a student of the University of Malaya.

The subject of the essays have a local bias towards the Malaysian scene and settings. Mr.H.R Cheeseman, CMG, was the Director of Education in Malaya during the Malayan Union era. One of his commendable tasks was to make the English language a compulsory subject in schools. He is remembered for his series of evening lectures and writings on education in Malaya during the period between 1900 until 1941.

He had written a few books such as Nelson's Malayan readers, Malayan English course, amongst other titles.
